Statistically speaking. During the first semester at Freie Universität in the winter of 1948/1949 almost 2,200 students were enrolled. Today, 75 years later, the university has about 33,500 students. At the beginning of the 1990s there were almost 60,000 enrolled students.

Each semester the number of students enrolled at Freie Universität Berlin was recorded in statistics books. Dr. Reinhard Ost, a former staff member of the University Archives compiled a time chart showing the number of enrolled students from the first semester through 2016:
