V. I. Bee. Because urban bees also need protection, in 2021 the Berlin Senate set up a Coordination Office for Bees, which is based at Freie Universität. Bee research as well as courses for hobby beekeepers have been offered on campus for decades. Students enrolled in veterinary medicine also learn how to work with this third most important livestock species.

Depending on the season as well as the type and number of research projects, between thirty and fifty bee colonies are cared for on campus.
