Best friends forever. Studying abroad for students at Freie Universität started in 1949, when a German student went on an exchange program to Stanford University. Today Freie Universität maintains partnerships with 40 universities in the United States and altogether 600 universities around the world. That includes 325 universities in Europe through the Erasmus+ program.
Sources and additional informationInternationality has played an important role at Freie Universität Berlin ever since the university was founded. The university’s close ties to the United States have historical roots. In 1948 the United States Allies in Berlin provided substantial support for the founding and development of a free university in the western part of Berlin. The founding impulse became an important feature of the university’s reputation. Today, internationality is firmly anchored in research and teaching. For many students, researchers, and staff it is a central aspect of their everyday life.
