Sustainable development and climate protection belong to the biggest global challenges of the twenty first century and will remain focal points of academic research and University life in the decades to come. The partners of Una Europa share an aspiration for the “sustainable university” as an institution that rises to meet global environmental and societal challenges. For universities, where the decision makers of the future are educated and relevant knowledge is produced, play a crucial role.
Una Europa’s Self-Steering Committee on Sustainability brings new insights into education to researchers and educators through innovative educational formats for sustainability. In this online community event, we foster collaboration, international perspectives, and interdisciplinary online learning opportunities within our Una Europa community.
Join us at an inspiring and interactive online event dedicated to exploring innovative educational formats for advancing sustainability education across Una Europa universities. In this session, you will learn about educational formats regarding sustainability and how to implement them further and scale up in your own teaching.

Keynote Speaker Prof. Marco Rieckmann Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Higher Education: Exploring MOOCs, Microcredentials, and Collaborative Online International Learning as Innovative Settings for ESD

Micro-Credentials and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses), offering flexible and accessible approaches to sustainability education (Laura Riuttanen, Helsingin yliopisto/Helsingfors Universitet)

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), an innovative method for connecting classrooms across borders to facilitate impactful teaching collaborations (Johanna Sári, Freie Universität Berlin)

Speakers
Marco Rieckmann is Associate Professor for Higher Education Development and holds a doctoral degree in Educational Research. His major research and teaching interests are higher education, competence development and assessment, (higher) education for sustainable development, and global education. Marco is representative of the German Educational Research Association (GERA) in the Council of the European Educational Research Association (EERA).
Laura Riuttanen is a university lecturer in atmospheric sciences at the University of Helsinki. She is a member of the Una Europa Sustainability Self-Steering Committee and
Academic Lead of the Una Europa Micro-Credentials in Sustainablity programme, as well as involved in the Una Europa Virtual Exchanges for Sustainability (UnaVEx) project.
Johanna Sári is the project coordinator for Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) at Freie Universität Berlin. FUB is also part of the Berlin wide BeCOIL network which consists of 9 Berlin higher education institutions. The network’s goal is to create common guidelines and COIL resources like a self-study course for teachers.
