Eldon Hinds spent the turbulent academic year 1968-69 at Freie Universität as a Fulbright scholar. He went on to Yale Law School and has now retired from his law practice in Houston, Texas.
What special memory/memories do you have from your time at Freie Universität?
It was a time of pronounced political and cultural turmoil, especially at the university where students staged several and extensive strikes. I never felt threatened and was able to converse with police as well as other students.
What is the most important thing you learned here?
I learned the value of different cultures and points of view and the importance of keeping an open mind.
What advice would you give your younger self today?
Listen and learn and don't isolate yourself from Germans outside the university.
If I could give Freie Universität a present for its 70th birthday…
...it would be visiting lecturers from different countries with different economic and political systems.
