Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik - SFB 1114: Skalenkaskaden in komplexen Systemen

Research assistant (praedoc) (m/f/d) with 75%part-time job limited to 30.06.2026 salary grade (Entgeltgruppe) 13 TV-L FU reference code: SFB1114-C06-2025

Bewerbungsende: 30.12.2024

CRC 1114 aims at methodological developments for the modelling and computational simulation of complex processes involving many (more than two) interacting scales, driven by real-life applications from the bio-, geo-, and material sciences. In its individual projects, mathematicians cooperate with colleagues from the natural sciences to advance both their modelling capabilities and their insight into concrete multiscale phenomena.

Job description:
Project C06 of CRC 1114 develops asymptotic models for mid-latitude atmospheric dynamics. An important focus concerns vortical flows, including tropical cyclones, mid-latitude blockings, and vortex flows emerging from weather fronts. The successful candidate for this position will

(i) extend the asymptotic analysis for tornado-like vortices from [1] to include anelastic effects,
(ii) develop a systematic near-surface boundary layer theory utilizing matched asymptotic expansions,
(iii) publication of this work in a high-level journal of theoretical fluid dynamics.

The project offers the possibility of pursuing a PhD.

Requirements:
Master degree in Physics, Engineering, or Mathematics.

Desirable:
Hands-on experience with methods of asymptotic analysis.
Insights into the dynamics of slender vortex filaments, experience in the preparation of scientific publications.
