The Department of Planetary Sciences and Remote Sensing is participating in ESA and NASA space missions. We are involved in the NASA Psyche mission. Psyche is a NASA discovery mission to the asteroid 16 Psyche, to study the initial conditions of the solar system during the formation and initial development of the planets.

The scientific and operational objectives of the participation over the entire mission period are in
detail:
• Support of stereo image planning and verification of image sequences
• Determination of surface topography
• Creation of orthographic and topographic map products
• Geological mapping and determination of surface age

As part of these tasks, a postdoc position is initially offered for the duration of the current project
period until March 2027.

Job description
The responsibilities of the postdoc position include in detail:
• Analysing the tasks to be performed and defining the methods and software in coordination with JPL an ASU
• Detailed acquisition planning and creation of corresponding workflow and data processing procedures in collaboration with JPL and ASU
• Participation in in-flight instrument calibration (photogrammetry)
• Participation in team meetings for observation planning
• Support and verification of stereo acquisition planning
• Communication of results at team meetings and conferences

Requirements:
• A completed university degree and doctorate in Planetology/Planetary Sciences, Geology, Astronomy, Geodesy or a comparable subject

Desirable

• In-depth knowledge of the geology of planetary bodies
• Expertise in planetary photogrammetry and photoclinometry
• Knowledge of Linux is required
• Knowledge of the ISIS and Ames Stereo Pipeline (ASP) software packages
• Experience with asteroid missions
• Knowledge of Python is an advantage
