Fachbereich Biologie, Chemie, Pharmazie - Institut für Chemie und Biochemie
Research assistant (praedoc) (m/f/d) with 65% part-time job limited to 3 years salary grade (Entgeltgruppe) 13 TV-L FU reference code: WiMi-AGPagel_260
Bewerbungsende: 26.01.2026
The Pagel research group at the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry of Freie Universität Berlin is an interdisciplinary and internationally well-connected team and is seeking a highly motivated, scientifically excellent, team-oriented, and experienced research associate (doctoral researcher) within the DFG-funded project Amyloid Cryo IR.
The aim of this project is to deepen the molecular understanding of how amyloid-β (Aβ) oligomers contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease. To this end, a new analytical method is being developed that combines ion mobility mass spectrometry with cryogenic infrared spectroscopy.
Job description:
The PhD student will help to establish this method, prepare recombinant Aβ peptides and variants, and perform structural measurements on oligomeric states inaccessible to traditional techniques. The work includes tracking changes in oligomer size, shape, and structure during aggregation, and studying how membranes, lipids, and metal ions affect their formation and stability. By integrating experimental data with modelling and complementary spectroscopy, the project seeks to identify structural features linked to toxicity and clarify how specific interactions alter aggregation pathways
Requirements:
- Completed university degree (M.Sc. or Diploma degree) in chemistry or biochemistry.
Desirable:
- Excellent Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Chemistry, at least grade 2 (equivalent to “good”)
- Experience in the (bio-)synthesis of peptides and proteins
- Basic knowledge of computational methods
- Knowledge in HPLC, mass spectrometry, and ion mobility spectrometry
- Excellent written and spoken English skills
- high motivation for scientific research
- Ability to work efficiently and self-organize even under time pressure
- Team spirit as well as strong social and communication skills
We look forward to receiving your application, which should include the following documents:
- A one-page letter of motivation why you would like to work in the AG Pagel, specifically in the project Amyloid Cryo IR, together with details of previous research experience and future goals
- Your curriculum vitae (including a list of publications if applicable),
- Proof of your academic achievements including copies of your Bachelor's and Master's degrees
- at least two letters of support.
