Moderated Discussion "Critical Masculinity or Criticisms of Masculinity?"

25.11.2024 | 14:00 s.t. - 16:00

This workshop invites students to critically analyze masculinity. We will discuss questions and uncertainties about male identity, as well as gender-specific roles and privileges.

From Till Lindemann to BTS, from Donald Trump to Antonio Rüdiger: representations of people perceived as male are more diverse than ever before in the public sphere. Meanwhile the traditional archetypes of masculinity – such as the breadwinner, alpha male, or heroic warrior – are still remarkably pervasive.

What influences students today and how is their masculinity composed? Students who identify as male are cordially invited to take part in this moderated dialog to discuss their uncertainties and questions about masculinity in 2024. Together with an expert, they will be given a space to discuss various aspects of their identity. In this way, they can discover methods and possibilities for emancipating themselves from traditional images on the one hand and sharing their privileges on the other.
