Student concerns (FAQs)
The registration period webpage provides an overview of the dates and deadlines for registering for modules and courses, as well as information on applying for courses with limited capacity.
You are not required to have registered online for a course before attending the first few classes.
However, you must register for the course online by the end of the registration period if you wish to continue attending the course. Please note that registration and the allocation of places in courses with limited capacity takes place at the beginning of the semester and those who wish to register after this time will only be able to do so if space is still available.
NOTE: Once the registration period is over, only the examination office for the subject or module is able to sign you up for modules or courses that you have failed to register for, pending a review of the special grounds for your failure to register.
You can drop a course or module yourself using the web interface at any time during the registration period.
You can drop entire modules, including the examinations and courses within these modules, as well as individual courses within a module. Once the registration period is over (three weeks after courses begin), only the examination office for the subject or module is able to remove you from specific courses and/or entire modules. Here, you must specify reasons why you no longer wish to take the course or module.
Students in bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, veterinary medicine, and law must register via Campus Management.
The state examination in pharmacy is currently not supported by Campus Management.
You can see if your degree program and examination regulations are displayed in and supported by Campus Management in the list of examination regulations supported by Campus Management (in German).
You will not be able to sign up for any courses before you are officially enrolled or have renewed your registration as a student. Enrollment and registration renewal take place at the beginning of each semester, and you must wait until these dates before signing up for any courses. The winter semester begins on October 1 and the summer semester begins on April 1. This also applies to students who have taken leave.
Please also note: After successful enrollment, your student data will be transferred to the Campus Management System at 10:00 a.m. the following day at the earliest, so that you will not be able to view it correctly until then.
Or have less than two hours passed since you activated your FU account and accessed the Campus Management System?
Then try logging in at a later time, as the user data will be transferred from the Campus Management System with a time delay.
If you are officially enrolled as a student and receive this message, please check if your degree program is supported by Campus Management (list of examination regulations supported by CM, in German). Otherwise, please phone the Freie Universität Berlin Info Service hotline at 838-77770 or send an email to cm-hotline@fu-berlin.de.
The Campus Management system should automatically display all the modules that you can study as part of your degree program and according to your examination regulations. These are displayed regardless of whether you meet the requirements for these courses.
If you cannot see a module that is required for your degree program, click the button “Neues Modul wählen” (select new module), then deselect the checkbox “Nur empfohlene Module anzeigen” (only display recommended modules), using the drop-down menu to select the option to display all degree programs. If the module you are looking for is not displayed here, please check whether you have already registered for the module by clicking “An- und Abmeldung” (register and de-register).

The most up-to-date information on which examination regulations are supported by Campus Management can be found in the list of examination regulations supported by Campus Management (in German).
Generally speaking, you register for all your courses via Campus Management.
However, some departments and central facilities have their own registration procedures in addition to Campus Management. If you are unsure which registration procedure applies to you, please inquire at your department or central facility in good time. If you are required to register using a system that is not Campus Management, do not forget that you must also register via Campus Management.
If you use Campus Management to register for courses with unlimited capacity, your registration is considered to be successful and will be confirmed immediately. You register for courses with limited capacity by assigning preferences to the courses you wish to attend. These preferences are only binding once they have been allocated and confirmed, at which point you will be able to see them in your timetable. You have the opportunity to drop these courses or to register for any free remaining spaces until the end of the registration period. For this reason, students are only registered for exams after the registration period.
First of all, please make sure that you have activated a semester or week in the timetable for which courses would actually take place. The timetable also shows lecture-free periods and public holidays. The Campus Management System does not always
for courses are not always stored in the Campus Management System. If the courses are listed in the detailed view of the respective module line under "An- und Abmeldung" (Registration and deregistration) without a time period, they will not be entered in the timetable. Please note that only courses in which a place could be made available to you will be listed in the timetable.
Therefore, courses with limited capacity will only be visible in the timetable after the allocation period. If individual courses are not displayed even then, please check the following via the detailed view in the respective module line under "An- und Abmeldung" (Registration and deregistration) whether you could also be assigned a course to attend.
Related modules supplement the learning objectives of a core subject in a meaningful way. More information about related modules can be found in your degree program regulations or by asking the departmental academic advising services for your core subject. Older degree program regulations sometimes refer to related modules as subsidiary subjects, electives, or elective modules. Some degree programs allow students to register for related modules directly via Campus Management. If this is not the case for you, please contact your examination office.
When choosing specific courses that have limited capacity, there are two options:
“Präferenz 1 bis x” (Preference 1 to x): “1” is your most preferred course, “2” your second-most preferred course, and “x” is your lowest preference (x depends on the number of alternative courses, e.g., where you can choose from 5 courses, “5” represents your least preferred option). You will only be registered in those courses you have marked with a low preference if the courses you have marked with preference “1” to “4” are already fully booked.
“Keine Teilnahme” (no participation): By selecting this option, you confirm that you expressly do not wish to participate in this specific course. In extreme cases, this may lead to you being unable to complete the module, for example, if you cannot be assigned to another course due to capacity constraints.
Expected to be discontinued from 2022/2023 winter semester onwards “Keine Präferenz” (no preference):
You accept that you will be allocated one of the alternative courses according to availability and have no preference regarding the content or time thereof.
Check to see whether other courses are taking place that you may have originally ruled out with the “keine Teilnahme” option. There may be free spaces available here. If this is not the case and the course in question is recommended for this semester according to the standard curriculum plan for completing your degree program, please contact your department or the institute responsible for the course and inform them of your situation.
You can find information on the times and locations of your courses in the electronic course catalog for your department/institute. This can be found at: https://www.fu-berlin.de/vv/en/fb?.
If the information in Campus Management deviates from this, please assume that the information provided in the course catalog is correct.
The number of exam attempts is determined according to a regulation that came into force in the 2015/2016 winter semester. This number is displayed on the interface at both the module level and the individual exam level. For example, you may see the information “1/4.” This means that you are registered for the first of four possible attempts, or that you have completed one of four possible attempts. Exams that were taken before October 1, 2015, and are thus not included within these regulations, are displayed without the number of possible attempts.
The last attempt will be highlighted in red.
If you fail to pass the module examination on the final attempt, the module is considered failed.
More information can be found at Important Regulations for Module Exams.
In the case of an obligatory examination date (marked in Campus Management with a “chain” symbol), you must withdraw from the exam within the withdrawal period by contacting either the examiner or the examination office. If you are prevented from taking part in an exam due to sickness or other reasonable grounds, you must provide corresponding evidence for these circumstances. Additional information can be found at Important Regulations for Module Exams.
A module can only technically be completed once you have registered for all the applicable courses in this module and after all the necessary data (grades, attendance, etc.) have been entered into Campus Management by the relevant instructor. If these requirements are met, the modules will be automatically marked as completed the following Sunday.
Teaching staff are instructed to document proof of academic performance in Campus Management as soon as possible following the end of the course or exam. This should be by the middle of the following semester at the latest. You can refer to the Framework Regulations for Degree Programs and Examinations section 10.5 for more details.
If you still have unconfirmed examination results, please contact the course instructor directly.
