Admission of New Members: Palestine

Special Session of the UN Security Council

Berlin, 8 February 2013 (10 – 18 h)

On 29 November 2012, the General Assembly of the United Nations conferred upon Palestine the status of a Non-Member Observer State.

This is widely considered a significant step forward towards full membership of Palestine. However, the admission of new members to the UN requires the previous recommendation of the Security Council. Palestine has submitted an application for membership already in September 2011, yet due to diverging opinion the Security Council has so far not voted on the application.

Apply now to debate this issue at a simulated session of the UN Security Council!

Members of the Security Council: Azerbaijan, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Guatemala, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Portugal, Russian Federation, South Africa, Togo, United Kingdom, United States.

Invited: Israel, Palestine.

Conference Fee: € 15.00 (for conference material as well as catering during the conference)

Applications are to be sent via email until 19 December 2012 to Peggy Wittke (peg@zedat.fu-berlin.de)

Your application should include:

  • Personal Details (Name, Address, Phone, Email)
  • Short CV, including field of studies and number of semesters
  • 3 country preferences
  • Short letter of motivation

There will be two mandatory preparation meetings on 8 January (16 - 18h) and 5 February(16 - 18h). Conference language will be English. Participants will take over the role of the Security Council members  or invitees, they are expected to conduct their country research independently.

Students from all faculties are invited to apply! It is possible to receive 10 ECTS-credits (Schlüsselqualifikation) if an additional essay is written (Hausarbeit).

We are looking forward to your applications
