Studying abroad with a disability

The choice of host country and host university plays a crucial role for students with disabilities, contributing to the success of their study abroad experience. The university abroad must be informed about the special needs of the student in order to be able to meet them and make studying possible without major problems. Many partner universities offer special assistance such as assistive devices, alternative exam arrangements, accommodations for the disabled.

An overview of health insurance and financing options is provided by the German Student Union at https://www.studentenwerke.de/en/content/studying-disabilities.

Information from the FU Berlin on advice and support for disabled and chronically ill students can be found on the following website: https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/einrichtungen/service/studierende/behinderte/index.html

Students with a degree of disability of at least 30 receive a lump sum of 200€/month in addition to the monthly funding rate per country group (LG1: 450€, LG2: 390€, LG3: 330€). Students with a degree of disability of at least 50 can submit a personalized detailed application if the monthly funding rate per country group plus the lump sum is not sufficient. The grant can only be applied for a financially supported period, not for zero grant periods.

Notes on the detailed application: A grant can be awarded for additional costs applied for, unless other national agencies - such as integration offices, health insurance funds, regional associations, social welfare offices, student services - finance them. These must be listed and proven when submitting the application. Additional costs are calculated by comparing the costs of a non-disabled person with those of a disabled person abroad. Further information can be found here.

Applications must be submitted with the help of the Erasmus International Student Mobility team 2 months before the start of the stay. Please inform us early so that we can advise you in the best possible way!
