Please explain what your project is intended to contribute and what is new about it. Clarify the target group of the project and the approach you have chosen. If you have problems applying online, please contact Sabine Heckmann (Phone: +49 30 838-70984).

Note: You are also welcome to use the readiness check for your idea development.

The call for applications consists of various phases. You can submit your application until the end of December 02, 2024. From December 3, 2024 to January 31, 2025, up to 5 ideas will be selected by a new jury. Applicants will be informed of the funding decision on February 01, 2025.

The selected ideas will be shared with the public. Subsequently, the “inventors” start with testing and implementing their respective ideas. They will receive support from our unit and others until the end of 2025.

The process is divided into three stages: Engagement-Building & Prototyping, Tweaking and Transfer & Evaluation. Those receiving support will be accompanied by workshops, seminars, advice, coaching, team jour fixes, meetings and public events.

At the halfway point, an event will take place in summer 2025, at which the results achieved so far will be presented by the team members to a broad audience. The project teams will be actively involved in the design of the event.

No, you cannot apply for more than one at the same time. This is because we want to give as many university members as possible the opportunity to submit ideas.

However, contact Sabine Heckmann (Phone: +49 30 838-70984 | Email: sabine.heckmann@fu-berlin.de), if you would like to know what other funding opportunities (such as for living labs) there are.

No, in the interests of all concerned, applicants cannot make changes to their application once they have submitted it.

As we see sustainability as a cross-cutting issue, you are free to choose the focus of your project. For example, you can offer solutions in the areas of resource conservation, mobility or health. You can work on a climate or biodiversity protection challenge or show how students or employees can be better supported to effectively contribute to solving sustainability problems.

However, your idea must relate to addressing a need or challenge in the context of the FU Climate Emergency Declaration or the FU Sustainability Mission Statement and offer a proposed solution.

Your idea does not have to be radically new, an improvement of an existing activity is also possible. Please present the novelty of the improvement.

Your idea can relate to your specific work or area of study or relate to another aspect that has to do with our university.

It should be clear from your application how you intend to strengthen the commitment, visibility, cooperation and knowledge transfer for sustainability within Freie Universität Berlin.

Since time is a scarce resource, we do not require immediate scalability of your idea. However, we will consider together with you and your team what options exist to grow your idea after the oficial funding phase.

The areas of activity teaching, research and campus can serve as inspiration, as can the FUturist projects of previous years. Feel free to contact our team if you have any questions or need advice.

Under areas of activity, you can see developments concerning campus, teaching, research, management, dialog & transfer, and networks.

Likewise, the current sustainability report and the environmental statement are important sources.

The projects of the FUturists from 2021/22, 2022/23 and from 2023/24 as well as the various initiatives of SUSTAINIT show what is being done.
