Areas of Activity
Sustainability management can only be successful when it involves all areas and levels of the university.
We want to increase the visibility of, bundle, and expand sustainability-related activities in research and teaching. Focal points are the integration of sustainability aspects into courses and the implementation the concept Education for Sustainable Development. We have valued sustainable campus operations since 2000. Energy management is the flagship of our activities. With a package that includes targeted programs and financial incentives, the university was able to reduce its energy consumption by more than 25% in a decade. Besides the University Alliance for Sustainability, founded by Freie Universität Berlin, we are involved in three other international and several regional networks with a sustainability focus. Among these are the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) and the project Sustainability at Universities (HOCHN) financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Ambitious gender equality and diversity policies are the cornerstone of our social sustainability management. This also includes health management and personnel development to further train and promote our employees. A dialogue with stakeholders outside the university and knowledge transfer are two additional important comprehensive areas of activity.
