Von Alumni für Alumni: Visit to the Archive and Museum Neukölln
A fascinating journey into the history of the Berlin district Neukölln - on July 12th, 2024, we visited our alumna Christa Jancik for a look behind the scenes at the Neukölln Archive and Museum. Idyllically situated on the Britz estate, the Neukölln Museum is the second oldest district museum in Berlin. It collects everything that has to do with Neukölln past and present. The history repository comprises a museum collection of things that tell special stories. For example, we were able to see a never-before-exhibited doll from 1902, which was made in Neukölln and was owned by a Neukölln family for generations. Postcards with views of the former Neukölln, old letters, tickets and collections of documents from the estates of interesting Neukölln personalities are a real treasure trove for history fans and are just waiting to be discovered.
And there is even a connection from Neukölln to the Freie Universität Berlin: The permanent exhibition "99 x Neukölln" includes the chessboard of the Polish-born artist Stanislaw Kubicki. He was the father of the founding student of Freie Universität Dr. Stanislaw Karol Kubicki with the matriculation number 1. The museum also has prints by his mother, the artist Margarete Kubicka, in its collection. In 1927, the family moved to the Britzer Hufeisensiedlung, where he lived until his death in 2019.
The Alumni Office would like to thank Christa Jancik for the wonderful idea of visiting the Archive and the Museum Neukölln and Julia Dilger for the insights into her work as head of the collection at the Museum Neukölln and looks forward to further events as part of the "Von Alumni für Alumni" series.
