Department of Veterinary Medicine

Veterinary research, educating students, and veterinary services take place in more than 20 academic institutions, including five veterinary clinics. The Department of Veterinary Medicine is one of five veterinary research institutions in Germany.

Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem

With 22,000 different plant species, the Botanic Garden and the Botanical Museum of Freie Universität is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Its plant research enjoys international renommee and along with the Dahlem Centre for Plant Sciences, it is integrated in numerous new fields of research.

Department of Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy

This Department includes three institutes: Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Pharmacy. There is a special focus on the life sciences.

Department of Earth Sciences

The Earth sciences include the institutes of Geology, Geography, and Meteorology/Space Sciences as well as other specific disciplines dedicated to understanding the Earth system.

Department of Physics

Researchers in the Department of Physics with its Institute of Experimental Physics and Institute of Theoretical Physics carry out basic research, especially in the fields of solid state physics, cluster physics, biophysics, and theoretical physics.

Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

In addition to mathematical and computer science topics such as analysis, dynamic systems, scientific computing, bioinformatics, innovative information technologies, or artificial intelligence, the two institutes also conduct applied research in the life sciences and Earth sciences.

Department of History and Cultural Studies

The Department of History and Cultural Studies covers a wide range of subjects, ranging in time from antiquity to modern times and spatially from Europe to the Middle East and Asia as well as North and South America. The Department features a breadth of research in the humanities found nowhere else in Germany.

Department of Philosophy and Humanities

The subjects at the Department range from the philosophy and cultures of antiquity to the Greek, Latin, English, Romance, German, and Dutch philologies, literature and comparative literature, and theater, film, and music studies.

Department of Education and Psychology

This Department includes teaching degree programs as well as research and other degree programs in education and psychology.

School of Business and Economics

The School of Business and Economics includes the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Economics.

Department of Law

The Department of Law at Freie Universität includes three institutes: Civil Law, Public Law, and Criminal Law.

Department of Political and Social Sciences

The Department of Political and Social Sciences includes the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science, the Institute of Sociology, the Institute for Media and Communication Studies, and the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology. The Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science is one of the most prestigious political science institutes in Europe. One of its major areas of research is governance research.

John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies, Institute for Latin American Studies, and Institute for East European Studies

Area studies research is done in the so-called central institutes at Freie Universität Berlin. They cover North and Latin America, Eastern Europe and East Asia, the Middle East, individual European countries.
