The Institute for East European Studies is one of the three interdisciplinary central institutes at Freie Universität, all of which focus on area studies. The institute’s research and teaching on the Dahlem campus reflect the diverse processes of change on the Eastern part of the European continent.
The region is heterogeneous, conflict-ridden, and very important, and with regard to the expansion of the European Union, there are many issues and challenges to be addressed.
Teaching at the Institute for East European Studies focuses around the multidisciplinary master’s degree program on East European Studies, which was developed several years ago, as well as the distance learning master’s program on East European Studies.
The institute’s research focuses on contemporary issues, especially those related to the processes of transformation in East Central, Southeastern, and Eastern Europe as well as the underlying historical conditions.
Other areas of research are the investigation of cultural issues as well as ethno-national conflicts in Eastern Europe.
