Prof. Dr. Islam Dayeh, Arabic Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin will deliver a lecture in English entitled "Burhan ad-Din al-Biqaʿi and the Intellectual History of 15th-c. Cairo" in Oriental Hall on the Tahrir Campus on 4 February at 6pm.
Although Burhān al-Dīn al-Biqā‘ī (1406-1480) is considered one of the most fascinating figures of Mamluk Damascus and Cairo, his work still remains largely unedited and his legacy is hence unexplored. In this talk we will look at key episodes of his intellectual biography, shed light on some of his works, and consider what they reveal to us about the intellectual landscape of Mamluk Cairo. We will focus particularly on the genealogy of his thought and attempt to connect it with intellectual currents in the Shām and the Maghreb.
