15th CTTC: "The Internationalization of Higher Education in Egypt"

17.06.2014 | 19:00

With Prof. Randa Aboubakr (Cairo University), Prof. Yasser Elshayeb (Cairo University) and Dr. Florian Kohstall (Freie Universität Berlin)

In the past decade internationalisation has acted as the central driver for reform in higher education, not only in OECD countries, but as well in Egypt and beyond. Policy-makers have introduced new schemes for student and faculty mobility, started to unify diplomas and adopted reform models from abroad in order to make the university fit for a globalized market of education. How do these processes unfold in Egypt? Who are the driving forces behind this process and how does it ultimately affect other central missions of the university such as socialisation and knowledge production. The 15th CTTC discusses the process of internationalisation of higher education in Egypt. It explores past legacies of higher education and debates future challenges for university reform and international cooperation in this field.

Prof. Randa Aboubakr is Professor at the Department of English Language and Literature, Cairo University. In her research she focuses on higher education in Egypt, comparative literature, Arabic and translation studies.

Prof. Yasser Elshayeb from the Bibliotheca Alexandrina is an Associated Professor of Engineering, Cairo University. As National Tempus Coordinator he has been involved in the Euro Mediterranean Policies and Dialogues on Higher Education and Research.

Dr. Florian Kohstall is the head of the Freie Universität Berlin Cairo Office. His thesis is on university reform, political change and the role of international donor organizations in the Middle East and North Africa.
