The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) invites applications for its competitive and research-oriented PhD program in mathematics, offering a dynamic academic environment across Berlin’s top universities: Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
Program Structure
The BMS offers two entry phases:
- Phase I (Master’s level): For students with a bachelor’s degree by summer 2025.
- Phase II (Doctoral level): For students who already hold a master’s degree and seek direct entry into doctoral research.
Application Deadlines
- Phase I with scholarship: Apply between October 1 – December 1, 2025
- Up to 10 funded places available
- Phase I without funding: Apply between March 1 – April 1, 2026
- Up to 10 places available
- Phase II (Doctoral research):
- Applications accepted in both rounds
- Start date: October 1, 2026
- Funding must be secured for at least three years
- BMS supports matchmaking with supervisors and offers limited internal funding
Funding Options
- Phase II candidates may be funded through:
- BMS (approx. 10%)
- MATH+ projects (approx. 30%)
- External scholarships or research positions (approx. 60%)
