The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) invites applications for its competitive and research-oriented PhD program in mathematics, offering a dynamic academic environment across Berlin’s top universities: Freie Universität Berlin, Technische Universität Berlin, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Program Structure

The BMS offers two entry phases:

• Phase I (Master’s level): For students with a bachelor’s degree by summer 2025.
• Phase II (Doctoral level): For students who already hold a master’s degree and seek direct entry into doctoral research.

Application Deadlines

• Phase I with scholarship: Apply between October 1 – December 1, 2025
  • Up to 10 funded places available
• Phase I without funding: Apply between March 1 – April 1, 2026
  • Up to 10 places available
• Phase II (Doctoral research):
  • Applications accepted in both rounds
  • Start date: October 1, 2026
  • Funding must be secured for at least three years
  • BMS supports matchmaking with supervisors and offers limited internal funding

Funding Options

• Phase II candidates may be funded through:
  • BMS (approx. 10%)
  • MATH+ projects (approx. 30%)
  • External scholarships or research positions (approx. 60%)
