Preparation
Please prepare yourself well beyond the administrative processes for your stay abroad.
We offer information on some important topics here:
Language:
PROMOS Language Course Funding
Semester language courses at the Language Center of Freie Universität Berlin
Intercultural learning:
Intercultural preparation on the EU Community Portal of DAAD International Club: Get to know international students before your stay abroad
Re-registration at the FU:
You must re-register at FU for each semester you will spend abroad in order to remain enrolled.
Leave of Absence and Semester Fees:
Erasmus students are not required to apply for a semester of leave. Nevertheless, it is often used because the semester of leave is counted as a university semester but not as a subject semester and therefore no study time is "lost". You apply for the leave of absence at the Student Administration Office.
You can find more information about a leave of absence here.
Reimbursement of semester ticket fees:
If you are abroad for more than four months or are on a leave of absence, you can apply for a refund of the fee at the Semesterticket Office of AStA.
Insurance abroad:
Despite the joy of being able to spend a period of study at a partner university abroad, you should not forget to take care of sufficient insurance coverage before commencing your studies abroad.
Health insurance
The benefits of a statutory health insurance do not usually apply in non-European countries. Students who are insured with a private health insurance company should ask their insurance company in detail whether and to what extent insurance coverage is guaranteed abroad, or whether additional insurance must be booked.
Since the scope of covered services is often insufficient, it is recommended to take out additional health insurance abroad. This recommendation applies all the more to countries with which no intergovernmental social security agreement exists.
Accident / Liability Insurance:
Upon enrollment, students of Freie Universität Berlin are automatically covered by accident and public liability insurance free of charge. This insurance coverage does not apply abroad!
Additional insurance:
Since the scholarship provider is not liable (neither the EU Commission, DAAD Bonn nor Freie Universität Berlin) for damages resulting from illness, death, accident, injury to persons, loss or damage to property in connection with the Erasmus+ stay abroad, it is generally recommended to take out the following insurances for the duration of the study period abroad.
International health insurance with repatriation (also in case of death)
Accident insurance with protection abroad
Liability insurance with protection abroad
It is possible to participate in the group insurance of the DAAD (health/accident and liability insurance) at one's own expense - for further information please contact the insurance office of DAAD.
