Domestic BAföG is not paid for the period of study abroad. However, you can apply for Auslands-BAföG at the responsible office. You can find more information here (in German). You can obtain the certificates of study abroad required for the application from the Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Team. It is important for domestic BAföG recipients that, after returning from abroad, a new application must be submitted to the BAföG Office responsible for the Freie Universität. It is good to know that a maximum of one year abroad is not counted towards the standard period of study in Germany. Hence, the maximum duration of BAföG support can be extended by one year.
