Application

Yes, you can apply through your core subject as well as through secondary subjects.

Yes, the Erasmus+ program is open to all students pursuing a (full) course of study at the Freie Universität Berlin leading to a recognized degree. This also includes students of a joint study program at the Freie Universität with another German university. Please note that you may need to apply for a visa for the host country, depending on your residency status.

Yes. You can apply for up to three programs offered by Direct Exchange -- some of which are regional (i.e. a group of countries) and some of which are individual countries. Within each program, you may rank your preferred university spots (up to 10 selections are possible within a program).

Yes, students can be funded for up to 12 months (24 months for state exams) per study cycle (bachelor, master, doctorate) through Erasmus+ study and/or internship. If you have already been funded in the same study cycle, the months already funded will be deducted from the maximum funding period.

Example: 5 months of Erasmus+ study completed in Bachelor's degree.
-up to 7 months can still be funded via Erasmus+ in the Bachelor (study/internship/graduate internship)
-Possible breakdown: 5 months Erasmus+ study, 2 months graduate internship.

In principle, you can participate in the Erasmus program both in the Bachelor, in the Master and during the doctorate. Nevertheless, the exchange places are offered for certain levels of study by the partner university and you can only apply for places at your level of study.

Good grades are certainly an advantage in the application process, but they are not the only deciding factor. Your letter of motivation and the personal interview with the selection committee are also included in the assessment.

Braodly, students with an average grade lower than 2,5 will have difficulty obtaining a placement, though this may vary depending on the course of study. In this case, we recommend students contact us for a personal consultation.

Most partner universities recommend that you already have a good knowledge of the language of the host country; in some cases, corresponding language certificates are required for the application. Erasmus+ students often have the opportunity to attend language courses, either as an intensive course before the start of the semester or during the semester. Most universities also offer study programs in English.

In the letter of motivation, you have the opportunity to explain how you qualify for the stay abroad at the desired university (language skills, interest in the profile of the university, interest in host country, connection to study program, etc.). There are no general guidelines for the letter of motivation.

As the applications for an Erasmus+ mobility grant are processed together with the applications for the Direct Exchange programme, the application deadlines of the direct exchange apply.
