There are not many places where, in a relatively small area, people from 130 countries can meet to study Egyptian philology or planetary science; where they have the opportunity to learn hang-gliding and Argentine tango; and where scholars who are politically persecuted in their home countries can find a safe place to do research. Freie Universität Berlin is such a place – a microcosm of diversity and uniqueness, without which life would be very plain indeed.
