In December 2019, Freie Universität declared a state of climate emergency, acknowledging its responsibility regarding sustainability and climate protection and setting itself ambitious goals. The university has practiced sustainability for many years in a variety of projects.

To meet the challenges of the climate emergency, Freie Universität has come up with seven targets. It has committed itself to considering the possible consequences for the climate in all its decisions and plans and to supporting the personal dedication to climate protection of all members of the university through a special “ideas and innovation management” program. Sustainability and climate protection will be core themes in all curricula and international networks of the university. In addition, Freie Universität aims to be climate neutral by 2025, continuing its efforts to promote sustainability and climate protection in its administration and on campus.
