Advancing research and establishing new contacts
Dauda Abubakar visited Freie Universität Berlin as part of the Research Alumni Program
Nov 01, 2021
My name is Dauda Abubakar, a senior lecturer with the Department of Religion and Philosophy, University of Jos, Nigeria and an alumnus of the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, Freie Universität. I was fortunate to be selected by the Freie Universität Berlin Research Alumni program for a fellowship under the hosting of my PhD supervisor Prof. Dr. Hansjorg Dilger at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology. The fellowship was initially scheduled for 2020 but because of Covid-19 travel difficulty, it was graciously extended to 2021.
During the period of my stay and despite the challenges of Covid-19 on FU campus, I was able to revise an article, which I sent in for publication with the Journal of Entangled Religion of the Center for Religious Studies, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. The article examined the attitude of Muslim and Christian religious communities in northern Nigeria towards Covid-19 in the country. Furthermore, I was able to establish important contacts for my new project on migration from Nigeria to Europe. Additionally, I have conducted several virtual meetings and had many fruitful research discussions with other scholars. These steps would have been difficult to achieve in Nigeria due to my tied schedule at the University there.
