Futures Studies deal with possible, probable, and desirable future developments. Although we cannot see the future, the basic features of important development structures are already taking shape today. Academic methods and social discourse allow us to see these rough outlines. This is where futures research comes in.
Futures Studies have become an important tool in certain areas, such as climate research and assessment of the future impact of technologies. But social developments, such as the future of the education system or changes in political participation, are also fields in which futures studies can play an effective role. The field serves to supply information about social, economic, ecological, political, cultural, and technological notions of the future and possibilities for development in these areas.
The results of futures studies / futures research open up the broad range of possible, probable, and desirable futures and lay them out for public discussion.
