For admittance to the master’s program applicants need to fulfill the following admission requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent university degree with a scope of 240 credit points and a proportion of Korean Studies that corresponds to the Bachelor's degree in Integrated Korean Studies at the Department of History and Cultural Studies at Freie Universität Berlin,
- Proof of Korean language skills (level 4 TOPIK),
- Proof of English language skills (level B2 CEFR), unless the university degree was obtained at an educational institution where English is the language of instruction.
The DSH - or German Language University Entrance Exam for Foreign Students - is obligatory for all applicants whose first language is not German and who have earned their initial degree from a university (or equivalent institution) where the language of instruction is not German.
Students do not pay any tuition fees, the university only charges semester fees and contributions each semester.
The subject of the Master's program is the in-depth social scientific examination of Korea as a subject of study in the East Asian context. Special emphasis is placed on teaching the methods of social science research on Korea. Students acquire in-depth knowledge of central discourses in Korea-related research and deal intensively with selected issues, taking into account the Korean research discussion. Furthermore, knowledge of current scientific discourses is imparted and developed in relation to Korea. In the modules of the Master's program, knowledge of selected phenomena, developments and processes in Korea are conveyed and discussed in a broader, also transregional context.
