Preparation of final theses
Application & Eligibilitiy Requirements
- Your study visit for the preparation of your theses must be a self-organized stay in a European or non-European country that is related to your study program.
- The duration of stay is at least one month (One month does not equal 4 weeks! Positive example: 01.07. bis 31.07. Negative example: 01.07. bis 29.07.)
- The maximum funding period is six months.
- Longer study or research visits can only be funded for the maximum funding period. Projects that are shorter than the minimum duration of one month cannot be funded.
- Full enrolment at the Freie Universität Berlin is required.
- PhD students are not eligible for funding in the category of preparing final thesis, study abroad, direct exchange and internship.

Required Documents
The link will take you to the online application portal. You can register via your ZEDAT account. The form is only available during the application periods.
Motivation letters should be written in German. Only in certain cases can students write their motivation letter in English. We recommend Adobe Acrobat Reader DC to fill out the form for compatibility reasons. Please refrain from submitting handwritten applications. Mozilla Firefox may not support the application form.
- Transcript of records
Please submit the printout “Übersicht Noten und Punkte” from Campus Management. Alternatively, you can submit a transcript which has been signed by your faculty’s examination office. Masters students must additionally submit their undergraduate degree certificate and transcript for their undergraduate degree.
- Certificate of Registration
You are required to submit a proof of enrollment at the FU for your study abroad.
- Proof of Nationality
We kindly ask you to submit a scan of your identity card or passport.
Letters of recommendation must be completed by a professor or teacher at FU using our form. Please note that language teachers or non-FU researchers are not accepted. The document can be written in either English or German. We recommend to first download the form and then fill in the various fields. If the person filling out the form signs it digitally, then the completed form must be emailed directly to us by said person. If the applicant submits the form with the rest of their application documents, the person filling out the form must also include the institute's stamp.
Skills of the host institution's language of instruction or the working language abroad must be proven for the application. The DAAD language certificate issued by the FU Berlin’s language center can be used for this purpose. Alternatively, you can submit a TOEFL or IELTS language test. Language certificates cannot be older than two years.
If you will be taking the Spanish test on the 4th of November 2025, you must submit your certificate latest by the 12th of November 2025. You must also have submitted all other necessary documents and have informed the PROMOS team that you are participating in the test by the application deadline on the 3rd of Novermber 2025.Exceptions:

Native speakers must submit either their high school diploma or degree certificate completed in the national language in their country of origin
Students who are currently enrolled in degree programs at FU that are taught exclusively in the relevant foreign language and whose language skills have already been verified upon admission to the study program do not need to submit any further proof of language proficiency for the PROMOS application.
- Proof of your research plans abroad
If you will be studying at an institution or university abroad, please submit your enrollment certificate and/or email correspondence with your supervisors abroad.
If you will not be researching for your thesis at an institution or university abroad, you must submit a confirmation from your institute at FU, that they fully support your research plans abroad. Please use our form for this purpose. If you additionally have contacted organisations abroad, you can also submit this correspondance. It is not necessary for you to submit the correspondence with organisations abroad to complete your application but it may have a positive effect on your application.
