Getting Information and Organizing Your Research
Primo
The library portal Primois the University Library's central search engine for finding for books, journals, journal articles, databases and other media, such as DVDs of feature films and series, comics, rare books, and maps.
Databases
The University Library provides a large selection of databases to members of all departments at Freie Universität Berlin, including licensed and free research databases, full-text archives, databases of facts and of images, video archives, and more.
Interlibrary loan and document delivery services
You can order media or copies of articles not held by the University Library from other libraries in Berlin, Germany or abroad via interlibrary loan request via the Kooperativer Bibliotheksverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (KOBV) portal. You will need a valid library card or Campuscard from Freie Universität Berlin or Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
Making a purchase suggestion
If the University Library does not have an item you need in its collection, you can make a purchase suggestion via the library portal Primo.
Digitization services
The University Library offers the following digitization services:
- You can have portions of books digitized, for example, chapters, sections, tables of contents, etc.
- You can order scans of articles from print journals for free via the library portal Primo.
Reference management tools can help you to keep track of citations while you are writing and publishing academic/scientific texts.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are free educational materials of any kind that are openly licensed and can be used free of charge. Presentations, graphics, worksheets, and even entire courses or textbooks can be released for reuse as OER.
The University Collections Coordination team supports the research and teaching collections at Freie Universität Berlin’s various departments and institutes in preserving, indexing, digitizing, and presenting their holdings.

Support in browsing and using our interview collections
The University Library offers you access to substantial interview collections, particularly those related to National Socialism and the Holocaust. We can support you in exploring our extensive collections and integrating existing interviews into your research and teaching.
Browsing the “Oral-History.Digital” interview portal
The Oral-History.Digital interview portal, which was developed at the University Library, is one of the most important archives in Germany for historical testimonies in the German language. The portal allows you to search for audio and video interviews conducted by various institutions over the last few decades on different topics. We can help you find interviews that could be relevant to your research and teaching.
Using interviews in teacher training programs
Multilingual online applications that provide access to video interviews on the topics of forced labor under National Socialism and the Holocaust can be used to convey the merits of these resources in school education to teachers in training. We can advise you on how best to incorporate them into your teaching.
