The Team
We are a team of three from the Department of Veterinary Medicine and employees of the Farm Animal Clinic.
Antonia Schildhauer is a licensed veterinarian and works as a doctoral student at the clinic. In addition to her doctoral thesis, she enjoys working on the enrichment of the clinic animals and is interested in animal and species protection.
Carolin Clara Missiha is also a veterinarian and works as a research assistant at the farm animal clinic. She joined our team when we realized that our many great ideas needed a little more support and is now planning and leading the elective course as part of our project.
Prof. Dr. Marc Drillich is the managing director of the clinic and provided the basic idea for our project.
About the idea
Our project idea came to us in the summer, while the green space maintenance in front of our offices was being carried out by machine-operated equipment. So it made sense to us to have our own sheep graze the areas as an alternative. This makes garden maintenance more sustainable and promotes biodiversity on campus. On the other hand, the husbandry of our sheep is improved in the sense of “enrichment”.
This idea developed further and we noticed a lot of other positive aspects.
The sheep we keep belong to the endangered domestic breed of rough-wool Pomeranian sheep. With our project and the targeted breeding of this breed of sheep, we can make a contribution to the preservation of the breed and thus to biological diversity. We would like to inform people about our project, the sheep breed and the protection of old domestic animal breeds in the form of information boards.
As part of an elective course, students work on topics such as sheep farming, grassland management, species protection and agricultural basics and can also support us in caring for and looking after the animals.
Outlook
Overall, we are very much looking forward to the start of our project and are excited to see what kind of response we will receive and how the project will develop.
