Dear Reader!

As usual in autumn and at the beginning of the semester, you will find in this newsletter numerous calls for applications for doctoral candidates and postdocs. And, true to tradition, there will once again be two lecture series this winter semester – one live on the local topic “Biodiverses Berlin” and one recorded: the introductory lecture of the Institute for East European Studies, “Mobility and Order: Models, Actors and Contestations in Eurasia.” Despite the English title, several of the lectures are in German.

Those interested in pursuing a master’s degree and perhaps currently applying for a scholarship may be interested in my fu:binar on the topic of master’s studies. There we will discuss what prospective students can expect at a German university and how to find a suitable master’s program — as always, once in English and once in Russian.

I am happy to answer any questions about studying and research stays at Freie Universität — including during online consultation hours.

Research Training Group (GRK) 3096 'One Health Approach to Soil-Transmitted Helminths'

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are parasitic worms which affect humans, animals and the environment alike. The extremely harmful consequences of STH infections are in stark contrast to the low scientific and social awareness of these infections and the lack of training for future researchers in this field. GRK 3096 aims to close this training gap by educating the next generation of helminthologists in a One Health approach that addresses soil-transmitted helminths in humans, animals, and the environment.

Within the three One Health areas “humans, animals and the environment” our RTG has defined research gaps on which the research projects will focus on. These are:

  • Clinical consequences of STH infections for infected humans & animals.
  • Identification of infection mechanisms of STH in humans and animals to identify new intervention targets.
  • Targeting environmental issues of STH in humans and animals to enable better public health interventions

As members of the German Research Foundation (DFG)-funded Research Training Group (GRK) 3096 'One Health Approach to Soil-Transmitted Helminths', successful applicants will work on scientific projects in an interdisciplinary manner within a structured doctoral program.

While animal models remain essential in studying systemic infectious processes, immune responses, and evaluating therapies, refinement measures to reduce stress and improve welfare in experimental animals are underexplored. In this 3RTG, we will address the central hypothesis of these infections causing general stress responses and behavioural changes, which can be assessed on metabolic level or by video observation and artificial intelligence analysis, respectively. New insights into these stress responses and behavioural changes will increase our knowledge of the respective diseases whilst contributing to minimise the disease burden on the experimental animals. Our strategy will allow us to compare stress responses and behavioural data between different species and classes of pathogens, leading to important synergies by using standardised methods.

The RTG offers a structured qualification programme for PhD candidates and a postdoctoral position at the RTG.

Scholarships at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies

The Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS) is a joint project by Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO). As a part of Freie Universität Berlin’s Department of History and Cultural Studies, our offices are situated on Freie Universität Berlin’s campus in Berlin Dahlem.

The BGSMCS supports doctoral candidates who develop academically well-founded and relevant answers to questions arising in various research areas under the thematical umbrella of Muslim cultures and societies. The BGSMCS also provides its fellows with access to a broad academic network. The program is ideal for highly qualified and socially engaged junior scholars with a global outlook.

For admission in October 2026, the BGSMCS will award two scholarships from the Gerda Henkel Foundation to projects with a historical focus. These scholarships include a monthly stipend for living expenses, as well as travel and research funds.

Additionally, the BGSMCS will select eight candidates who will be guaranteed a place at the graduate school on the condition that they raise their own external funding (private funding is not permitted).

Self-funded Fellowships for Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective

The Cluster of Excellence Temporal Communities (EXC 2020) has set itself the task of fundamentally rethinking the concept of literature from a global perspective. We understand and study literature as an individual and collective practice that operates in and through time, creating its own temporalities in the process. Bringing together international researchers from fields as diverse as literary studies, art history and art theory, film studies, theatre studies and philosophy, our work is characterised by a collaborative, exploratory approach that fosters exchange between the humanities and the arts in exciting new formats.

For the year 2026, EXC 2020 invites applications from early career and senior scholars — with fully self-funded status — who are conducting research related to the Cluster's research programme. Successful applicants will be hosted for a period of up to 12 months between 1 January and 31 December 2026 at Freie Universität Berlin.

EQUALFIN PhD Fellowships in Economics

The doctoral program EQUALFIN aims to address the interaction between the financial system and socio-economic inequality at national and global level as well as new conflicts of objectives arising from the financing of the ecological transformation at macro- and micro-economic level. The research will be methodologically pluralistic, multi-paradigmatic and interdisciplinary.

Requirements

  • You must have a degree in economics or a closely related discipline.
  • In accordance with the FU Economics departments’ PhD regulations of the Economics Department of the Freie Universität Berlin, candidates need to hold a Master degree* in Economics or a closely related course of study. In exceptional cases, when the first supervisor comes from the Political Science department, a MA degree in Political Science is required.
  • Prerequisite for application is knowledge of the German language at B2 level, at the start of the fellowship.
  • In accordance with the selection criteria of the Hans Böckler Stiftung, you should demonstrate social commitment or trade union activities.

GEAS offers a structured 3-year doctoral program for 4-year PhD processes with a regional focus on East Asia (China, Japan, Korea). Doctoral dissertations at GEAS are expected to analyze modern or contemporary East Asia in the fields of politics, society, economy, culture, law or history.

Successful applicants will have an above-average master’s degree in either area studies (Chinese Studies, Japanese Studies, Korean Studies) or a discipline represented at the Graduate School with a focus on East Asia. While applicants are not expected to contact potential supervisors before their application, they are highly encouraged to review the profiles of GEAS faculty to ensure the compatibility of their project with GEAS professors’ research profiles.

Freie Universität Berlin International Summer and Winter University (FUBiS), Term I 2026

FUBiS ist ein drei- bis sechswöchiges wissenschaftliches Intensivprogramm an der Freien Universität Berlin, das einmal im Winter und zweimal im Sommer stattfindet. Im Term I (05.-23.01.2026) bietet FUBiS Kurse in verschiedenen Fächern und Themen sowie Intensiv- und Halbintensiv-Deutschkurse in fünf Stufen an. Ein Teil der Fachkurse wird in englischer Sprache angeboten und von deutschen und ausländischen Lehrkräften unterrichtet. Am Ende des Programms erhalten Studierende ein Zertifikat über Credit Points (ECTS), das an ihrer Heimatuniversität anerkannt werden kann. Das Programm ist kostenpflichtig.

FUBiS is a three to six-week scientific intensive program at Freie Universität Berlin, which takes place once in winter and twice in summer. Some of the specialist courses are offered in English and taught by German and foreign teachers. Call for Contributions: Berlin University Alliance lädt zur Grand Challenges Conference nach Berlin

Math PhD at the Berlin Mathematical School

The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is the graduate school of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+ and a joint endeavor of the mathematics departments at the universities in Berlin: Freie Universität (FU), Humboldt-Universität (HU) and Technische Universität (TU).

We offer an excellent doctoral program taught in English in a broad and active research environment together with mentoring programs, language courses, soft-skills seminars, funding for summer schools and conferences, a buddy program and funding for students with children.

“Mathematics as a whole” is a leading principle of the BMS. Its focus encompasses fields that are traditionally termed “pure” or “applied” mathematics, though we prefer not to make that distinction. Within the framework of the seminar, in the first part, such practical issues as the types of master's programs and their formal and linguistic conditions for admission will be considered: how to choose a suitable study program, what to look for when applying and what documents should be submitted within what time frame? Using the example of differences between education systems, the information necessary for the successful choice of a program of study and the transition from one system to another will be presented.

In the second part of the fu:binar, there will be an opportunity to ask questions on all topics related to master's programs.

Ringvorlesung: Biodiverses Berlin – aus der Sicht von Forschung, Naturschutz und Gesellschaft

Die Berliner Stadtnatur ist vielfältig – rund 20.000 Arten leben hier. Damit gehört unsere Stadt zu den artenreichsten Großstädten Europas. Doch diese Vielfalt ist bedroht: Nirgendwo ist der globale Wandel so spürbar wie im urbanen Raum mit seinen versiegelten Böden, seiner städtischen Hitze und seinen vielfältigen Schadstoffbelastungen. Lebensräume für Tiere und Pflanzen werden zerstört und fragmentiert. Durch globale Aktivitäten befördern wir Menschen weitere Arten rund um den Globus. Einige davon werden invasiv und schädigen einheimische Arten. Der Schutz der biologischen Vielfalt spielt in der Forschung, im Naturschutz und in der Berliner Politik eine zentrale Rolle, denn ihr Verlust schadet auch uns Menschen. Naturverbundenheit und mentale Gesundheit sind eng miteinander verknüpft. Citizen Science und Umweltbildung können dazu beitragen, die Nähe zur Natur zu fördern. Aber auch jeder Einzelne kann etwas für Natur und Artenvielfalt tun!

Diese öffentliche Ringvorlesung zeigt, was Berlin in Sachen Biodiversität zu bieten hat und beleuchtet das Thema aus der Perspektive von Forschung, Naturschutz und Gesellschaft. Wissenschaftler*innen der Freien Universität Berlin forschen zum Beispiel zur erstaunlichen Biodiversität des Bodens, zu invasiven Arten wie dem Waschbären oder zur genetischen Vielfalt von Pflanzen. Die Universität betreibt aber auch aktiven Naturschutz mit dem Botanischen Garten, der eine der weltweit größten Lebendsammlungen von Pflanzen beherbergt, und dem Blühenden Campus, der sich für wilde, habitatreiche Grünflächen einsetzt.

Based on the differences between master's degree programs in Germany and Georgia, the types of master's degree programs, admission requirements including language skills are presented using the example of Freie Universität Berlin.

Afterwards, the participants will have a concrete idea of which master's degree programs they can choose, what the application process looks like and which documents have to be submitted and when. During the seminar there will also be the opportunity to ask general questions about studying and living in Germany.

Introductory Lecture: Mobility and Order: Models, Actors and Contestations in Eurasia

This lecture series is offered by both Institute for East European Studies and international researchers with a focus on Eastern Europe, Russia and Eurasia. The role of voluntary and involuntary human mobility within and across state borders is coupled with the role of political regimes, social orders and cultural landscapes in Eurasia.

Diversity and labor, migration and development as well as the imprint of refugees in their host economies and societies are discussed across several disciplinary dimensions. Yet, interactions between mobility and order in the region occur in a time of reshaping the existing political, economic and cultural world order. This reshaping is driven by the deepening of the Russian-Chinese partnership, Russia’s attempts to secure its zones of influence, economic nationalism, and the weakening influence of the “West”. Therefore, we also invite lectures that connect the regional focus to the emerging logic of geopolitics and geoeconomics and the construction of alternative institutions that influence both –- mobility and order.

Around the world, nationalism, populism, and authoritarianism appear to be on the rise. Federica Mogherini’s lecture, “The New Global Disorder: Europe’s Future in a Fracturing World,” will provide insights into the countless geopolitical challenges currently facing politics and explore questions such as: How can Europe defend its interests and values in an era of Trump, Putin, and Xi?

Federica Mogherini was a member of Italy’s Chamber of Deputies from 2008 to 2014, before serving as the country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in 2014 and as EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Vice-President of the European Commission, from 2014 to 2019. As High Representative, she chaired the EU Foreign Affairs Council (of Ministers) and headed the European External Action Service (EEAS). She has been Rector of the College of Europe since 2020 and also serves (among many other roles) as a trustee of the International Crisis Group and a Fellow of the German Marshall Fund.

Joschka Fischer will join Mogherini on stage and share his perspectives on these issues. Fischer was Germany’s Federal Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor from 1998 to 2005. He previously served as deputy prime minister and (twice as) minister for the environment and energy in the State of Hesse. Fischer was a member of the German Bundestag (the lower house of the German parliament) from 1994 to 2006. He was a professor at the Woodrow Wilson School at Princeton University and today works as a consultant and speaker on geopolitical issues.

Tanja Börzel, professor of political science at Freie Universität, will moderate the event. Professor Börzel is the director of the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script” and is head of the Berlin Center for European Studies.

Die Werner Siemens-Stiftung fördert neue chemische Systeme zur Umwandlung nachhaltiger Ressourcen

Ein Team aus Chemikern und Mineralogen der Freien Universität Berlin wird in einem WSS-Forschungszentrum auf der Basis einer neuen Chlor-Technologie einen wichtigen Beitrag zu einer nachhaltigen und kreislauforientierten Chemie leisten. Die Werner Siemens-Stiftung unterstützt das Forschungsvorhaben für die nächsten zehn Jahre mit 18 Millionen Euro.

Bereits im Frühjahr 2023 erhielt der Chemiker Prof. Dr. Sebastian Hasenstab-Riedel mit einem Team der Freien Universität Berlin einen von sechs Forschungspreisen in Höhe von einer Million Schweizer Franken, mit denen die Stiftung Forschungsideen zu Technologien für eine nachhaltige Ressourcennutzung auszeichnete. In der Folge erhielt das Forschungsteam die Option, einen Antrag für eine zehnjährige Förderung einzureichen.

Chlor ist viel mehr als das Desinfektionsmittel fürs Schwimmbad. Als eine der wichtigsten Grundchemikalien spielt das Element für mehr als die Hälfte aller Produkte der chemischen Industrie wie Kunststoffe, Arzneimittel oder Agrochemikalien eine wichtige Rolle. An die 100 Tonnen elementares Chlor (Cl2) werden jährlich erzeugt, meist durch Elektrolyse aus Kochsalz (NaCl) und Wasser (H2O). In Deutschland ist die jährliche Produktion von 5,5 Millionen Tonnen Chlor für ca. 2,3 Prozent des gesamten Stromverbrauchs verantwortlich. Da Chlorgas extrem reaktiv ist, sind sowohl die Produktion, die Lagerung, der Transport als auch die Nutzung mit erheblichen technischen Herausforderungen verbunden.

Social and Cultural Anthropologist Dr. Marcos Freire de Andrade Neves Awarded ERC Starting Grant

Social and cultural anthropologist Marcos Freire de Andrade Neves carries out research at Freie Universität Berlin on the global spread of sodium pentobarbital, a pharmaceutical that is primarily used to facilitate both voluntary and coerced death. The European Research Council (ERC) has now awarded him an ERC Starting Grant worth 1.49 million euros for his interdisciplinary research project MORTALMED. The project aims to shed a light on the societal, political, and cultural dimensions of sodium pentobarbital and its use.

Freire de Andrade Neves’s research project, MORTALMED (“Mortal Medicine: The Social Life of a Death-Inducing Pharmaceutical”), will be funded by the European Research Council. The project combines qualitative and quantitative research methods in a mixed-methods approach to analyze sodium pentobarbital’s role as a “pharmakon” (i.e., both a remedy and a poison) and how it is integrated into various legal frameworks, power structures, and cultural practices around the world.

Specifically, Freire de Andrade Neves will trace sodium pentobarbital’s circulation across three key contexts: assisted dying in Switzerland, state-sanctioned executions in the United States, and its commercialization in Mexico.

Freie Universität Berlin to Coordinate New European Project on Developing Sustainable Solutions for Livestock Feed

Freie Universität Berlin is leading a new European research project on sustainable animal feed solutions. The project, NUTRIFEEDS (Nourishing Europe’s Future through Regenerative Livestock Feed), is part of the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, specifically within the cluster “Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment.” The project will receive a total of 6.8 million euros from the European Commission. The consortium includes institutions from across Europe and one from China for a total of fifteen members in all.

Professor Jürgen Zentek of the Institute of Animal Nutrition at Freie Universität Berlin’s School of Veterinary Medicine is coordinating the four-year project.

The project aims to develop the regenerative production of high-quality, protein-rich animal feed in order to advance more sustainable agricultural systems. The consortium’s work will contribute to reducing the environmental impact of animal farming, to promoting biodiversity, and to improving efficiency across the agricultural value chain. The project brings together expertise on animal nutrition, plant production, environmental protection, and climate change as it examines questions of soil fertility, the nutrient cycle, and economic viability.

Berlin University Alliance beschließt umfassende Agenda zur Umsetzung des Leitbilds für eine Offene Wissenschaft

Nach einer inklusiven und transdisziplinären Konsultation mit ihren Verbundpartnerinnen veröffentlicht die Berlin University Alliance am 19. Oktober 2025 ihre Agenda zur Umsetzung des Leitbilds für eine Offene Wissenschaft. Die Agenda ist Ergebnis von Diskussionen mit Forschenden in 21 Fakultäten und Fachbereichen sowie 28 Expert*innen zu Open Science, Publikation, IT und Weiterbildung über konkrete Bedarfe und Herausforderungen bei der Stärkung offener Forschungspraktiken. Um diesen Bedarfen zu begegnen, priorisieren die Leitungen der vier Verbundpartnerinnen nun Handlungsfelder, in denen Open Science effektiv und nachhaltig gefördert werden soll.

Die priorisierten Handlungsfelder umfassen Aspekte offener Wissenschaft von der Förderung einer wissenschaftsgeleiteten Publikationskultur über den weiteren Ausbau von Forschungsdaten-Infrastrukturen bis hin zur Schaffung neuer Anreize in der Forschungsbewertung. Jede der vier Verbundpartnerinnen der Berlin University Alliance wird dabei eigene Akzente setzen, zudem wurde gemeinsame Maßnahmen auf der Ebene des Exzellenzverbunds vereinbart.

KI.Assist@FU - Der zentrale KI-Chatbot für Lehre und Studium

Mit KI.Assist@FU bietet die Freie Universität Berlin Lehrenden und Studierenden erstmals einen zentralen, datenschutzkonformen und chancengerechten Zugang zu generativer Künstlicher Intelligenz.

KI.Assist@FU basiert auf der Open-Source-Plattform HAWKI und erlaubt die Nutzung verschiedener großer Sprachmodelle im Rahmen einer datenschutzkonformen Architektur. Nutzende können wählen zwischen GPT-Modellen von OpenAI, die über Microsoft Azure in europäischen Rechenzentren betrieben werden, und offenen Modellen, die von der Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG) bereitgestellt werden. Die Nutzung erfolgt über den persönlichen FU-Account im zentralen Single-Sign-On-Verfahren und ist bis auf Weiteres kostenlos. Die eingegebenen Daten werden in keinem Fall zum Training der Modelle verwendet.

Das Eckpunktepapier dient als verbindlicher Orientierungsrahmen für den reflektierten Umgang mit KI. Es beschreibt, wie Lehrende und Studierende KI-gestützte Systeme ethisch, sachgerecht, rechtssicher und didaktisch sinnvoll einsetzen können. Damit wird gewährleistet, dass die Chancen der Technologie genutzt werden können, ohne Kompromisse bei Fairness, Nachvollziehbarkeit und rechtlicher Sicherheit einzugehen.

Körber-Stiftung würdigt herausragendes Engagement für MINT-Berufsorientierung für Mädchen

Die renommierte Körber-Stiftung hat auch in diesem Jahr bundesweit herausragende Projekte für naturwissenschaftlich-technische Bildung ausgezeichnet: Unter dem Motto „Ausbildung stärken“ der Ausschreibung „MINT-Regionen wirken!“ wurden fünf Beispiele für vorbildliche Netzwerkarbeit für die MINT-Bildung geehrt. Die Preise sind mit jeweils 5.000 Euro dotiert. Charoula Finkelnburg, Koordinatorin des MINT-Clusters „Mach’s Genau!“ an der Freien Universität Berlin, erhielt die Auszeichnung für ihre Arbeit im Projekt „NATürlich Ausbildung! Schüler*innen entdecken Ausbildungsberufe“. In diesem Projekt bündeln drei Institutionen (das Gläserne Labor auf dem Campus Buch, das Museum für Naturkunde Berlin und die Freie Universität Berlin) ihre Ressourcen, um besonders jungen Mädchen praxisnahe Einblicke in naturwissenschaftlich-technische Berufswelten zu geben.

Das Projekt „NATürlich Ausbildung!“ setzt auf Storytelling, um junge Menschen für eine andere Perspektive auf Ausbildung und Beruf zu gewinnen. „Erzählt werden Geschichten, die sie interessieren und mit denen sie sich persönlich identifizieren können. Der Mensch steht bei uns im Mittelpunkt und zugleich lernen die Schülerinnen neue Arbeitsfelder kennen“, so die Projekt-Koordinatorin Charoula Finkelnburg, selbst eine Absolventin der Freien Universität Berlin, die sich bei mehreren Projekten des Netzwerks GenaU im Bereich der MINT-Berufsorientierung engagiert.
