Discussion series of CeDiS, ADA and DHC
In the winter term of 2018/19, the Dahlem Humanities Center of Freie Universität Berlin and the Center for Digital Systems (CeDiS) began to jointly organize the series Digital*Humanities im Gespräch (Digital*Humanities in Dialogue). Since its founding in 2022, the Ada Lovelace Center for Digital Humanities (ADA) had also served as a collaborative partner for this conversation series, which ended in the winter semester of 2023/24.
The event seriens was inspired by the rapidly advancing technical possibilities which opened up new fields of research in the humanities, but which simultaneouly brought challenges in dealing with traditional methods and procedures. While the linguistic sciences in particular could look back on many years of practice in this field, digital procedures had for a long time only been used sporadically in other disciplines of the humanities.
The talks in this series asked how the quite diverse range of practices and methods, which are summarized under the label 'Digital Humanities', relate to the approaches in the humanities that are interested in theory and criticism and focused on interpretation. The talks, which took place at irregular intervals but usually on a Thursday afternoon, were each organized around the presentation of current projects and concrete applications. Presentations of new methods and approaches of the Digital Humanities were always linked with current theoretical and research questions in the humanities.
