Eligibility to apply
1. Who can apply?
If the following statements apply to you, then you can apply for a Deutschlandstipendium scholarship:
- I am enrolled as a student at Freie Universität during the funding period for which I wish to apply.
- - or - I have received a letter of acceptance from Freie Universität Berlin and will begin my studies there in my first semester (or higher)
- During the entire funding period (winter and summer semester), I will still be within the standard time to degree for my degree program (in my major field of study) at Freie Universität.
If you meet the criteria above, then applications are welcome
- ...at any point during your studies (even your first semester) within the standard time to degree
- ...for bachelor’s, master’s, or state exam programs
- ...from students of all nationalities
- ...in any field
- ...from full-time or part-time students
- ...from students completing their first or second degree program or other higher education program
- ...from students of any age
Please note that you need to apply for the scholarship in your major field of study.
2. Who is not allowed to apply?
We would like to remind you again here that you cannot get a study placement at Freie Universität Berlin by applying for a Deutschlandstipendium. At the time of application, you must already have received your acceptance notification or already be enrolled in the first semester (or higher) of your degree program.
The following are not allowed to apply:
- Students who are not enrolled at Freie Universität Berlin
- Students who applied for a study placement at Freie Universität, but who did not receive a letter of acceptance
- Students who will have exceeded the standard time to degree in the funding year they want to apply for.
- Doctoral students at Freie Universität Berlin. Doctoral students can learn about other sources of funding at Freie Universität Berlin through the university’s graduate studies portal.
- Students at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. They have their own Deutschlandstipendium program: Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin’s website with information on their Deutschlandstipendium program.
- Students who are concurrently enrolled at multiple institutions, but whose main university of enrollment is not Freie Universität Berlin (i.e. who are not paying their semester fees to Freie Universität Berlin)
- Students who are already receiving merit-based support of more than 30 euros per month. Compatible scholarships that can be combined (information available in German only)
- Students who are not seeking a degree from Freie Universität (for example, Erasmus students or other exchange students who are only at Freie Universität for a semester or two, or EinS@FU-students)
3. Who do we encourage to apply?
Anyone who fulfills the selection criteria has the same equal opportunity of receiving funding through the Deutschlandstipendium.
We encourage the following students to apply in particular:
- Students who have had to flee their home countries
- Students who successfully completed the Welcome@FUBerlin Program and are now enrolled at or have succesfully applied for a degree program at Freie Universität Berlin
- Students with a family history of immigration
- Students whose parents did not attend university
- Students who receive Bafög
- Students who have children
- Students with a chronic illness or a disability
- Students who are competitive athletes and training for the Olympics
- Students who are older than the traditional age of students
- Students who received their university entrance qualification in a non-traditional way ("zweiter Bildungsweg") or who already completed vocational training ("abgeschlossene Berufsausbildung").
