Small Grants

Mentees and mentors of "Academics in Solidarity" can apply for small grants to cover the costs of:

***Please note that Small Grant-Funding is on hold in 2023!***

Research Partnerships

AiS mentees can apply for small grants of up to 5.000 EUR to develop a research project proposal jointly with a counterpart (AiS mentor or university host professor) in Germany, Jordan or Lebanon, who acts as a co-applicant. With this funding scheme, we explicitly encourage establishment of cross-national research groups or research tandems. The small grant for research partnerships supports the development of joint research project proposals to be submitted to national and international research funding institutions (such as DFG, EU, private foundations), beyond programs specifically designed for at-risk scholars (e.g. PSI, PAUSE). A prerequisite for this small grant is the absence of a full-time employment contract or a full-time-equivalent fellowship/stipend for the main applicant during the grant period.

Eligibility and selection criteria:

  • Registered AiS mentees in cooperation with a counterpart e.g. host professor/project partner or mentor in Germany, Jordan or Lebanon
  • Quality of the project concept note
  • Absence of a full-time employment or a full-time-equivalent fellowship/stipend for the main applicant during the period of work on the project proposal*
  • Sound budget estimation

What can be funded:

  • Honorarium of the main grantee of up to 4.500 EUR for a completed research project proposal, developed over a period of 3-4 months and submitted to a German or international research funding agency. The honorarium will be paid to the mentee based on a freelance service contract (non-employment) upon review of the project proposal by AiS and submission to the research funding agency
  • Proofreading expenses of up to 500 EUR

To apply, please send to ais@fu-berlin.de:

  • Filled out application form, signed by both main applicant and co-applicant
  • Research project concept note (1.500-2.000 words), including research rationale, main objectives/research questions, methods to be used and expected contribution(s). The concept note should also indicate for which funding agency/scheme the proposal is intended.
  • Current academic CVs of main applicant and co-applicant

Applications should be sent in PDF format and are accepted on a rolling basis!

*Please note: It is possible to apply for the small grant while still being employed full-time or receiving a full-time-equivalent stipend. If selected for funding, the small grant period will start after the expiration of the employment contract/stipend.
