At Freie Universität Berlin, fundamental and applied research is performed across a large number of individual projects and in collaborative projects with other institutions within and outside of the academic sector at the regional, national, and international levels.  This form of academic networking has contributed to the development of research clusters at Freie Universität Berlin for years, and has created new fields of research.

Beyond the research performed as part of individual academic and scientific projects within the departments, central services, and central institutes, Freie Universität Berlin has an extensive interdisciplinary and international research network. The initiators of these kinds of research alliances include the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), which provides funding for collaborative research centers, research groups and research training groups, priority programs, research units, and the German excellence initiative.
