This seminar examines the growing influence of social movements in transforming food systems, with a particular focus on Berlin’s local food movements and alternative initiatives. Students will critically explore the socio-ecological transformation of global and urban food systems, addressing pressing challenges like food insecurity, environmental degradation, and social inequalities. By studying the dynamics between corporate food regimes and grassroots initiatives, students will engage with the broader issues of food sovereignty, sustainability, and justice.
Participants will map food movements in Berlin, analyzing their impact on the market, state, and civil society, while learning qualitative research methods such as ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and social media analysis. The seminar is ideal for students from diverse disciplines, offering a hands-on approach to real-world research and the chance to contribute to meaningful food system transformation.
