Germany’s reunification is often viewed as a model of peaceful transition. But more than 30 years later, has German society truly become more peaceful—or not? This is the key question our research group will explore by focusing on how the post-unification generation of young Germans understands peace.

The course offers hands-on empirical research training within the historical context of Germany’s division and reunification. Students will develop research questions, design studies, conduct fieldwork, and analyze both qualitative and quantitative data. A key component is the introduction to Q methodology, which focuses on subjectivity and cognition. Highlights: A field visit to the DDR Museum in Berlin is planned. Develop basic research skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis. Gain a deeper understanding of the concept of peace.

Though the course will be taught in English, students are expected to have a good command of both German and English. Advanced undergraduate and graduate students from all academic backgrounds are welcome.
