How have competing interpretations of Al-Andalus influenced constructions of Spanish national identity and the delineation of cultural Otherness? To understand contemporary Spain, it is essential to examine how Franco and the scholars under his regime perceived Al-Andalus, as well as how they engaged with Jewish and Islamic actors. This includes contextualizing Franco’s role during the Shoah and exploring his relationships with the Arab world.
We will analyze different forms of cultural Otherness during this period and contrast them with broader Spanish cultural structures. The complexity of Othering—often masked by patronizing or romanticized discourse—is deeply rooted in a politicized interpretation of Al-Andalus’ history, which, in turn, reflects Spain’s shifting conceptions of national identity.
Students will play a central role in shaping the topics to be discussed. During the first session, we will collectively decide on the language in which the X-Tutorial will be conducted.
