Minimum language requirement: TOEFL iBT: 84*, IELTS: 6.5*, CAE (C1 level). Exceptions: Native speaker; entire studies and degree in English.

Attention: The exchange spot is open to graduate students and PhDs of German Studies, Comparative Literature, Film- and Theatre Studies, Cultural History, Pedagogy, and interested students from other disciplines. Exchange students will be admitted in the German Department and the scholarship is connected with teaching for the German Department. Very good German knowledge is required. The scholarship holder will teach a German language course which meets 4 times per week and must hold 2 office hours per week, totalling 20 working hours per week. The scholarship holder will receive excellent pedagogical training through an introduction to Teaching Methods and Graduate Student Instructor Training Program. 

Additionally, the scholarship holder must attend two seminars in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures, including our annual colloquium program. An additional 11 credit hours can be taken within or outside the department in study disciplines of interest. If interested in obtaining a Masters (MA) degree, students must complete 24 credits in total during the exchange year. Six (6) credit hours of approved graduate level courses (the equivalent of two Hauptseminare or Colloquia) will be requested for transfer from the FU-Berlin. Nine (9) credit hours total will need to be taken in the fall term (late Aug-December) and nine (9) credit hours total will need to be taken in the winter term (January-April).

A Master degree could be obtained at the University of Michigan after the completion of one exchange year.

Additional Scholarships:

The scholarship includes visa documents charge allowance, $ 12,990 per semester or $ 25,980 for the entire academic year as well as health insurance. In return, the scholarship holder must give lessons (see above).
