All exchange students are enrolled at the Center for Japanese Studies. There, you can choose between the IJP (Intensive Japanese Program) and the MJP (Modern Japan Program). You can find more information here.

Intensive Japanese Program: JLPT N5 (alternatively, a language certificate issued by FU language instructors is also accepted)
At the beginning of the semester abroad, placement tests are conducted at Nanzan University. These do not replace the required language certificate at the time of application.
All students are required to take a Japanese language course. Nanzan University offers six levels of Japanese, ranging from beginner to advanced.
At least one of the listed language certificates must be submitted at the time of application.
