International University Entrance Qualification

It does not depend on the location of your school whether you have a German or an international higher education entrance qualification, but on the type of school-leaving certificate you have. You also have an “international HZB” if, for example, you have completed

  • an International Baccalaureate at an international school in Germany
  • the assessment test at a preparatory college (Studienkolleg)

In general, these prospective students must apply for a VPD (preliminary review documentation) from uni-assist, which they can use to apply via the Freie Universität Berlin application portal within the application deadlines of Freie Universität Berlin. Please note the information on applying for the VPD.

Please note in case of AbiBac: If you have a French Baccalauréat from the French Gymnasium in Berlin, you have both a German and a French qualification. If you apply with your German school leaving certificate, you have a German university entrance qualification. As soon as you wish to apply with your French school leaving certificate, you are considered a prospective student with a foreign university entrance qualification and must apply for a VPD at uni-assist. Please note the information on applying for the VPD.

The assessment of international certificates is determined by the Central Office for Foreign Education (Zentralstelle für ausländisches Bildungswesen ) of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz). On the following websites you can find out whether you can study in Germany with an international school-leaving certificate:
