Library cards
For Freie Universität Berlin students the student card is concurrently the user card for the FU libraries.
External users can obtain library cards at the circulation desks at no charge.
Cards are valid throughout Freie Universität including Charité.

Self-Retrieval from the Open Stacks (Offenes Magazin)
Currently there is direct access to media by call numbers, which can also be ordered via the Library Portal Primo. All other media must be ordered via Primo before lending them.
Orders From Closed Stacks
Books or journal volumes marked as "Magazin" or "Außenmagazin" have to be requested via the Primo library portal. The media can only be borrowed after a notification has been received.
Items that are waiting to be picked up will be held available for loan for five opening days at the circulation desk. The precise date is indicated in your Primo user account.
When making a reservation, you can decide at which FU circulation desk you would like to pick up media for lending. (For logistical reasons the philological library and Charité libraries do not participate.) You can choose one of the available pick-up locations during the process. Delivery to a library other than the owning library usually takes 1-2 days - you will be informed of the availability by email.
Reservations for Items on Loan (Hold Requests)
Items that are out on loan can be reserved. When they are available for loan, you will be informed by email.
Loan Period, Renewals
The regular loan period at the University Library is four weeks.
Loans can be renewed. Renewals can be managed by yourself in the user account. Before the loan period ends, a reminder e-mail is sent to the user as a service of the Library System.
For interlibrary loans, the loan period is flexible depending on the conditions of the lending library. Renewals are not possible. However, if the loan period is longer than 4 weeks, it may be shortened.
Returns
The book drops at the main entrance (Garystr. 39) are open for returns.
You can return items belonging to Freie Universität at any circulation desk, exluding Charité libraries.
Inter-library loans have to be returned only at the University Library.
