Joint journal article of UBC-professor and UAS fellow on findings from research stay.

News from Jul 30, 2019

Ina Tessnow-von Wysocki, UAS fellow in 2016 and 2018 published an article based on her research findings from a University Alliance for Sustainability-funded research stay at the University of British Columbia, Canada (UBC) in 2018. Written in close collaboration with her then supervisor Prof. Philippe Le Billon (UBC), the article “Plastics at sea: Treaty design for a global solution to marine plastic pollution” was published in the latest journal volume “Environmental Science and Policy 100 (2019)”.

The authors identify treaty design as a key factor for successful environmental regulations. Their analysis of the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols showed that seven treaty design elements are particularly determinant for success in the establishment of mechanisms addressing marine plastic pollution. Tessnow-von Wysocki and Billon state that these methodological considerations, together with an inclusive treaty negotiation process, are likely to help overcoming governance challenges and could drive the elimination of marine plastic pollution forward.
