Welcome to Freie Universität Berlin!
News from May 28, 2018
During the annual Long Night of the Sciences on June 9, 67 teaching and research facilities in Berlin will open their doors for science enthusiastic night owls who are eager to dive into a variety of exciting topics on campus.
The Long Night of the Sciences will be hosted by numerous departments of Freie Universität Berlin across Berlin-Dahlem and Steglitz, who guide visitors through a vivid program, consisting of lectures, presentations, life music acts, guided tours and lively discussions. The program will take place from 5pm - midnight, starting with an introductory talk by Michael Müller, the Governing Mayor of Berlin, at 4 pm. Guests will have the opportunity to engage in experiments, workshops and interactive projects, and learn about basic and applied research as well as interdisciplinary research. Sustainability and Sustainable Development will play a crucial role this year! The student initiative SUSTAIN IT! invites visitors to an interactive DIY project where you can mix your own seasoned salt with herbs from the UniGardening Project to take home! Furthermore, a guided “FUdsharing tour” will give insights into food sharing options and waste management on campus.
Other departments also highlight sustainability topics:
The Institute for Geographical Sciences and Physical Geography will be focussing on “Our Natural Resources” and will shed light on terms such as x-ray fluorescence analysis and watershed management.
Under the headline “Weather and Climate”, the Institute for Meteorology will provide guests with a combination of experiments, presentations and a “Guided Tour through Meteorology”.
“Where does our drinking water come from?” The Institute for Geological Sciences will elaborate on resource management and consumption.
The Long Night of the Sciences is a special event that combines knowledge transfer, fun activities and interdisciplinary exchange, and we are looking forward to welcoming you to Freie Universität Berlin!
