Pop-(F)Up-Gardening – Everyone can garden, anywhere!
Presentation of the project "Pop-FUp-Gardening" during the FUturist Awarding on June 8, 2022.
The Idea Team
I was a student at the FU Berlin and a one-woman project. I was very lucky to grow up with a huge garden and to be shown how to tug from it all year round. I was very interested in the topics of sustainability and food sharing and the FUturist competition came at the perfect time.
About the Idea
"Welcome to the jungle" is not only one of my favorite songs, but also the motto for my apartment and my balcony. Many people have also fallen for this motto thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and working from home: Always look on the bright side of life. Another plus were the pop-up cycle paths that emerged during the first lockdown in spring 2020. Inspired by this, I called for pop-up gardening! Let's be a green guerrilla and turn the city's gray eyesores into a green oasis of nourishment!
As part of the project, I wanted to use workshops to show as many people as possible how easy it can be to grow your own food and how little it takes. Pop-(F)Up-Gardening combines the existing Blühender Campus, Unigardening, FUdsharing and FUndgrube projects and takes them to the extreme: small biotopes are created at central FU locations. The beds not only provide snacks for people, but also for insects and birdsThe long-term goal is for the beds to "take care of themselves". Robust, hardy perennials, herbs and lettuces have been planted that will sprout again next year or are self-seeding. Containers with rainwater were also provided - not only for watering, but also as a drinking trough for animals. Sharing is caring!
Gardening workshops were held in June 2022 - workshop flyer (German) and workshop flyer (English)..
In the meantime, there was a tea kitchen campaign: "Have you discovered us yet? We are lemon balm, mint, sage and thyme. Enjoy us hot as a tea with sweet honey. But we are also very refreshing cold. We love to sunbathe! We - lemon balm and mint - also need a lot of water and should always be slightly moist. On the other hand, we - sage and thyme - as Mediterranean herbs prefer it a little drier. If you take good care of us, you'll enjoy us for a long time!"
Planting pop-up beds is not difficult and gardening is simple.
If you want to take a look at the pop-up beds, you can find them at Fabeckstraße 23-25, Ilsestraße 1-4, Garystraße and Thielallee.
You can also read and listen to the plant biographies below.
Conclusion
I was particularly happy to snack on fresh raspberries straight from the bush. Once you've done this, you'll never want mushy, decaying - and in winter particularly tasteless - raspberries from the supermarket again. Enjoy gardening!
