Workshop: Ancient (Egyptian) Antiquities and the Global North

On October 10, 2020, the workshop “Ancient (Egyptian) Antiquities and the Global North: Difficulties, Challenges, and Opportunities from Different Perspectives” will take place at Freie Universität Berlin. The workshop is organized by Ana Sofia de Carvalho Gomes as part of the Dahlem Junior Host Program.

Ana Sofia de Carvalho Gomes is a doctoral candidate in History and Cultural Studies at Freie Universität Berlin and is working on a dissertation with the working title “Dealing with Egyptian Cultural Heritage – From Antiquity to Modern Times.” As part of this research, she is examining the various factors and actors that influence and shape the handling of Egyptian cultural heritage in the Global North. Particular attention is paid to the trade and ownership of ancient Egyptian cultural assets from Middle Egypt, the behavior of art market states, and the challenges, difficulties, and opportunities involved in dealing with Egyptian cultural assets from different perspectives.


The workshop brings together the following experts on the topics:

  • Sara Aly (British Museum, Art Market Investigator)
  • Ulrike Dubiel (August-Kestner Museum Hannover/Freie Universität Berlin)
  • Marcel Marée (British Museum/CircArt)
