Quo vadis, EU?

MEU Model European Union Student Conference Simulation on January 22 and 23, 2019, at Freie Universität Berlin

№ 018/2019 from Jan 21, 2019

Students from several European countries will meet on January 22 and 23, 2019, in Berlin to discuss the future of the European Union (EU). As part of the transnational project Model European Union (MEU) they will simulate participation in an EU conference. The participating students will assume the roles of representatives of European institutions and member states. The exit of Britain from the EU, the so-called Brexit, is an opportunity to reflect on the current challenges facing the international community and to debate their uncertain future. Freie Universität, in cooperation with the UN/EU Documentation Center at the University Library, is organizing the two-day conference simulation entitled “The EU at 27 – Quo vadis, EU?” Altogether 38 students from numerous European countries are expected to attend. The conference language is English. The event is open to the media and other visitors.

For the past 15 years, the Department of Law at Freie Universität has been organizing the Model European Union in Berlin. The purpose of the event is to give students a first-hand impression of European cooperation as well as of the structures and decision-making processes of the EU and urgent transnational issues. The project is a type of interactive political role play. It provides students with knowledge about rhetoric and negotiation strategies, enhances their understanding of the work of the EU, and allows them new insights into current European policy from many different perspectives.

This year’s MEU will simulate a special EU meeting to be held in May. The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker scheduled the meeting shortly before the European elections to be held in the Romanian city of Sibiu to discuss the consequences of Brexit. The 27 remaining member states of the EU will set new priorities and future strategies for Europe. Freie Universität has invited students from all over Europa to the Model European Union to jointly conduct this important debate. The participants can contribute their own ideas and find their own answers to Europe’s urgent issues for the future.
