What is #news on TikTok? Theory and concepts for understanding news in the social media age
Anna-Theresa Mayer
Kommentar
TikTok is becoming a leading social media platform for the production and distribution of short-form, individualized news videos aimed at young audiences. With its strong algorithmic curation, multimodal construction of videos with additional elements (GIFs, emojis, etc.), and emphasis on short content, TikTok has disrupted traditional ways of journalists’ news production and enabled non-traditional actors, such as influencers, activists, and political actors, to produce and frame news-like content.
This seminar is coupled with the seminar 28633 “What is #news on TikTok? Methods for analyzing news on social media platforms”. The coupled seminars have the goal of enabling students to conceptually understand and empirically explore how news content is evolving in response to social media platforms. This seminar introduces students to key theoretical concepts related to the platformization of journalism, the adaptation of news to TikTok’s affordances, and audience-centered approaches to understanding what constitutes news on TikTok. Furthermore, students will learn to critically engage with current studies on news on social media and develop their own questions for empirical research.
The coupled seminars are structured around an empirical group project, allowing students to directly apply the concepts and methods related to news content on TikTok. The seminar assignment across the coupled seminars consists of a group term paper in line with the module requirements and oral presentations (midterm and final). Please note that this seminar will be held in English. Schließen
