S - Thematische Vertiefung: Critical perspectives on right-wing movements in agricultural spaces

Kommentar

Rural places in Germany, as in many other locations, are marked by high election results of right-wing parties. At the same time, rural life and farming in particular is often romanticised, imbuing farmers with authenticity and political agency. This seminar critically investigates the simultaneous construction of rural, agricultural spaces as romanticised ideal and as hotspots of right-wing extremism. Building on theoretical approaches from political ecology, students will engage with current issues in agricultural spaces, such as land grabbing, “farm dying” and climate change and examine the way they are mobilised by and interconnected with nationalist and right-wing social movements.
